This Medley Relay Calculator allows coaches to quickly compose the fastest relay team available to them. Enter up to 6 swimmers, enter their personal bests for each event and then hit calculate. The Medley Relay Calculator will then provide you with the fastest relay combination available to you. Works great for the 4 x 50 and 4 x 100. Here is the current World Record held by the USA men’s team from Rio 2016.

How Does the Medley Relay Calculator Work?

  1. Enter up to 6 swimmers’ names and their personal best times for each stroke or event.
  2. Click the Calculate button.
  3. The calculator analyzes all possible swimmer combinations and orders to find the fastest relay lineup for your team.
Example: See the current World Record held by the USA men’s team from Rio 2016 for inspiration.

Why Use a Medley Relay Calculator?

  • Determine the optimal order of swimmers for medley relay races.
  • Maximize your team’s potential by analyzing best times.
  • Save time and make data-driven decisions for race day.

What Is a Medley Relay?

A medley relay is a swimming relay event in which four swimmers each swim one different stroke, in a fixed order: Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, then Freestyle. This is different from an Individual Medley (IM) race, where one swimmer completes all four strokes in the order Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Freestyle. Standard medley relay formats include the 4×50 (short course, common in high school and club swimming) and 4×100 (used at NCAA, US Nationals, and Olympic level).

Why Swimmer Order Matters

Unlike freestyle relays, where any order of swimmers works equally well, medley relays require matching swimmers to the stroke they perform best. A team of four talented swimmers can still swim a slow medley relay if placed in the wrong strokes — an average backstroker who happens to be an elite breaststroker will be faster swimming breaststroke. This calculator solves that assignment problem automatically by testing every possible combination of swimmers-to-strokes and returning the lineup with the lowest possible combined team time.

Standard Medley Relay Rules

  • Each swimmer completes only their assigned stroke — no swimmer swims more than one leg.
  • The stroke order is fixed: Backstroke → Breaststroke → Butterfly → Freestyle.
  • The backstroke leg starts in the water (or off the blocks, depending on format); the remaining three legs use a relay takeover/touch exchange.
  • The most common competitive distances are 4×50 (short course) and 4×100 (short course and long course).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the correct order of strokes in a medley relay?
A: The medley relay order is Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, then Freestyle — the reverse of the order used in Individual Medley (IM) races, which start with Butterfly.

Q: Can a swimmer compete in more than one leg of a medley relay?
A: No. Each of the four legs of a medley relay must be swum by a different swimmer; the same swimmer cannot swim two strokes in the same relay.

Q: How many swimmers can I enter into the Medley Relay Calculator?
A: You can enter up to 6 swimmers and their personal best times for each stroke. The calculator tests every possible combination of 4 swimmers and stroke assignments to find your fastest overall team.

Q: Does the calculator work for both 4×50 and 4×100 medley relays?
A: Yes. Enter personal best times for whichever distance you’re building a relay for (50s or 100s) and the calculator will optimize your lineup accordingly.

Q: Why might the fastest 4 individual swimmers not make the fastest relay team?
A: Because medley relays require matching each swimmer to a specific stroke, the four fastest overall swimmers may not produce the fastest team if their best stroke isn’t the one they’d be assigned. The calculator accounts for this by testing every valid stroke assignment, not just overall individual speed.
