Why Do World Aquatics Points Matter?
The World Aquatics points system (formerly known as FINA points) allows for a standardized comparison of swimming performances. Since different events have different speed potentials, the points system “levels the playing field.”
- Compare Different Strokes: Is a 1:05.00 in 100m Breaststroke “better” than a 58.00 in 100m Butterfly? The points will tell you.
- Track Year-on-Year Growth: See if you are getting faster relative to the world’s best, regardless of the event you swim.
- Meet Qualifications: Many national governing bodies, such as USA Swimming, Swimming Australia, and Swim England, use these points for meet entries and “Swimmer of the Year” rankings.
The Science Behind the Score
The calculation is based on a cubic curve. The “Base Time” is the current World Record (or a specifically defined benchmark) set by World Aquatics for each event.
The Formula:
Points = 1000 × (Base Time / Your Time)³
Where:
The Power of 3: The “cubed” nature of the math ensures that elite-level improvements are rewarded more heavily than beginner-level improvements.
Base Time: The official benchmark time (usually the current World Record) for your specific event.
Your Time: Your recorded swim time converted into total seconds.
